example1: if you see intense activity on your web site for an IP like 66.102.9.1 and you look for the owner of that IP, you will see the owner of that IP is Google. GoogleBot just spider your web site.
example2: you speak with a person in a chat program and that person pretend it is from a foreign country, you can check the IP to see if this is true.
